On May 21st, the International Student House of Washington, DC was privileged to welcome H.E. Shigeo Yamada, Ambassador of Japan, as the latest speaker for our continued Ambassador Speaker Series.
Daniel Bremer-Wirtig, Executive Director, opened the program before Makiko Tada, a House Resident, introduced the Ambassador. Originally from Tokyo, Tada previously worked as a government employee and currently studies Space Policy at George Washington University. She also contributed beautiful Ikebana floral arrangements for the event, inspired by cosmic phenomena. Ambassador Yamada reflected on his time as a diplomatic student in the United States, where he trained for a career with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. According to the Ambassador, much of his time was spent with American friends at Carleton College, an experience he likened to that of many Residents of I-House DC.
The Ambassador offered captivating insight into both historical and contemporary Japanese affairs, and optimism regarding the country’s evolving relationship with the United States. H.E. Yamada also provided substantive answers to the many questions of the audience, ranging from a typical day in the life of an Ambassador to the evolving role of artificial intelligence in the workplace.
The discussion concluded with a recognition of the importance of continued educational and cultural exchange between Japan and the United States, specifically highlighting programs such as JET that help facilitate that exchange. The night continued with a reception, and H.E. Yamada kindly took time to answer further questions and take photos with attendees.
I-House DC extends its thanks to H.E. Shigeo Yamada and the Japanese Embassy for taking the time to participate in what was a memorable installment of our Ambassador Speaker Series!
