Third Annual Tulip-Palooza: Spring has Sprung at I-House DC

April 28, 2025 by Adrienne Wild

On March 28, 2025, Residents, Board Members, local Alumni, and Friends of the House gathered in the Garden of the International Student House of Washington, DC (I-House DC) to celebrate our third annual Tulip-Palooza event. Attendees enjoyed arranging beautiful bouquets of tulips, graciously donated by the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, before hand-delivering them to neighbors and local businesses.

The flowers were repurposed after the Embassy’s annual “Dutch Tulip Days” event at the residence of the Ambassador, H.E. Birgitta Tazelaar, where thousands of tulips were displayed in recognition of the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II. In appreciation of the Dutch principle of sustainability, each and every bulb was preserved and will be planted at I-House DC this fall.

Our very own Resident, Makiko Tada from Japan, also led an exciting workshop on the Japanese art of flower arrangement. Makiko explained the origins and philosophies of Ikebana while guests followed these practices to assemble their own creations.

House Chef Warren Eggleston and the talented Eurest team prepared a beautiful display of appetizers and refreshments for participants to enjoy throughout the afternoon’s festivities.

We extend our heartfelt thanks to everyone who joined us at 1825 R Street for a memorable afternoon filled with tulips, conversation, and joy.

A special thanks to H.E. Birgitta Tazelaar and the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands for their generous support and ongoing partnership, to our Residents for their enthusiasm and engagement, to our Board Members and Alumni for their active contribution, and to our friends and the public for participating in this beloved House tradition. Your kind efforts made this year’s Tulip-Palooza a resounding success, and we eagerly anticipate the opportunity to welcome you again in the future.

Residents and House Staff load the delivered tulips into the Garden, where they pose with Deputy Ambassador Janna van der Velde, before trimming and arranging the flowers.

2023 Oktoberfest: Celebrating Cultures at I-House DC

November 6, 2023 by Oshin Bista

On October 26, 2023, I-House DC welcomed over 60 Residents, alum, Board Members, and supporters of the House to celebrate the beloved Bavarian tradition of Oktoberfest. This event was an excellent opportunity for Residents to create new memories while the alum raised their steins, reminiscing their times at the House.

The evening started with a delightful German-themed dinner, catered by Eurest, featuring a delectable spread of pretzels, bratwurst, sauerkraut, kartoffelsalat, and, of course, the obligatory Gluhwein. As the night unfolded, legends and stories about the House came to life, with Residents and alum engaging in meaningful fireside chats on the crisp Fall night. Gathering around the firepits, they roasted marshmallows, made s’mores and celebrated the remarkable community of I-House DC.

Shoutout to House alum, Associate Committee Member and long-time supporter Minh Dang and the Head Fellow, Rempee Kalia, for spearheading the knots and bolts of the event and to all the alum, Residents, and supporters who came out to share the celebration. Our German Residents, Antonia Holland-Cunz from Kiel and Christian Kutter from Markstraße, led an informational game about different German and Bavarian traditions, which was not only educational but equally fun, if not more! Prost! This collaborative effort stands as a shining testament to the values and community-building spirit that lie at the heart of the experience of living at the House.

It is moments like these that the mission of intercultural exchange, lifelong connections and global citizenship truly shines at the House and that make our community so unique!
