Cyprus, Iceland, Malta: Establishing a Diplomatic Presence in Washington, DC

Ambassador Pantelides presented his credentials to President Barack Obama on June 27, 2016.  Ambassador Pantelides previously served as First Deputy Permanent Secretary/Director of the Middle East and North Africa Division at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (2013-16); Ambassador/Permanent Representative to the UN in Geneva (2011-13); and Head of the Diplomatic Office of the President of the Republic (2008-11). He was the Cypriot Ambassador to Russia, with parallel accreditation to Armenia, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan and Belarus (2004-08); Ambassador to Greece, with accreditation to Albania, Bulgaria and Romania (2001-04); and Ambassador to Sweden with accreditation to Iceland, Norway, Latvia and Denmark (1998-2001).

Ambassador Haarde presented his credentials to President Barack Obama on February 23, 2015. Ambassador Haarde was Prime Minister of Iceland from 2006 to 2009, the country’s Minister for Foreign Affairs from 2005 to 2006. He was also the Minister of Finance from 1998 to 2005. Ambassador Haarde previously served as a long-time member of the Icelandic parliament, the Althingi (1987-2009); Chairman (2005-09) and Vice Chairman (1999-2005) of the Independence Party; member of the International Monetary and Financial Committee of the International Monetary Fund (2002-04); and Chairman of the Independence Party’s Parliamentary Group (1991-98). Ambassador Haarde was a resident scholar at International Student House of Washington, DC when he was a student at Johns Hopkins University SAIS.

Ambassador Agius presented his credentials to President Barack Obama on March 2, 2016. A career diplomat, he previously served as Malta’s Ambassador to Poland (2013-16), and Ambassador to France and Monaco (2012-13). In 2008, he was appointed Ambassador to Belgium, and Ambassador to Luxembourg in 2009, during which time he also served as Ambassador to the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. In December 2007, he was appointed Special Envoy of Malta to the Slovenian Presidency of the European Union in Ljubljana.  Ambassador Agius joined the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 1993 as a First Secretary and two years later served his first posting at the Maltese Embassy in Paris.
