Tihomir Stoytchev is the Ambassador of the Republic of Bulgaria. Bulgaria holds the presidency of the EU Council until June 30. Ambassador Stoytchev presented his credentials to President Obama on June 27, 2016. Previously, he served as Foreign Policy Secretary to Bulgarian President Rosen Plevneliev. Ambassador Stoytchev began his career in 1994, working in the European Integration Directorate. In 1996, he became third secretary in Bulgaria’s mission to the European Union as the country prepared to join the organization. He returned to the European Integration Directorate in 2000 as Secretary of the EU Internal Market subcommittee. Stoytchev was assigned to Washington as political and economic counselor in 2003. Four years later, he served as head of the Department for EU External Relations, Budget and Financial Instruments, International Economics and Financial Organizations. In 2005, he returned to Washington as Deputy Chief of Mission in the embassy, serving as Chargé d’Affaires from 2009 to 2010.
Wolfgang Waldner is the Ambassador of Austria. Austria will assume the presidency of the EU Council on July 1. Ambassador Waldner presented his credentials to President Obama on January 11, 2016. He previously served as Austria’s Ambassador to Hungary. Ambassador Waldner joined the Foreign Service in 1981 and was named cultural attaché at the embassy in Washington in 1983. Ambassador Waldner then served as personal secretary to the Foreign Minister before being named in 1988 to lead the Austrian Cultural Institute in New York. In 1999, Waldner become head of Museums Quartier. He returned to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 2011, when he was named State Secretary for European and International Affairs. The following year, he was made minister for the regional government of Carinthia, before returning to the Austrian Ministry of Foreign Affairs as Director General for Cultural and Scientific Affairs.
Lauri Lepik is the Ambassador of Estonia. Estonia is the immediate past president of the EU Council. Ambassador Lepik presented his credentials to President Trump on September 8, 2017. Previously, he served as Estonia’s Ambassador to NATO. He began his career in 1987 serving as Research Director for the National Library of Estonia. In 1992, Lepik moved to a post in the State Chancellery, working on policy and national security issues for the Office of the Prime Minister. Lepik became an adviser to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 1995 and the following year became political advisor to the embassy in Washington serving for a time as Chargé d’Affaires and as Defense Counselor. In 2004, Lepik became head of the European Security and Defense Policy Bureau in Estonia’s Ministry of Defense. In 2005, he was named senior adviser to the defense section of Estonia’s mission to NATO and became the delegation’s deputy leader three years later. In 2011, he was named Ambassador to Ukraine and Moldova. In 2012 Ambassador Lepik was named as Estonia’s Permanent Representative to NATO, serving between 2014-2015 also as the Dean of the North Atlantic Council. Lauri Lepik has a diplomatic rank of an Ambassador and is married with two adult children.
