Deepak Ram: Deepak Ram is a versatile artist who is well known for his evocative performances in traditional North Indian (Hindustani) Classical Music, his collaborations with musicians of other genres, his innovative compositions and for his excellence as a teacher. He has been awarded the Best Instrumental Album, South African Music Awards in 2000. Deepak was selected by The Board of Directors of Indo-American Chamber of Commerce in California for the  2007 Award of Outstanding Contribution to Arts and Humanities. He has eight solo albums to his credit and as a session musician can be heard on over twenty-five albums. Deepak’s bansuri can also be heard on movie soundtracks, such as “The Fast And The Furious”, “Matrix Revolutions”, “India, Kingdom of the Tiger”, “Stealth” and “Before The Rains”

Pepe Gonzàlez: Living in Washington, DC, Pepe Gonzàlez is a performer, composer, producer, arranger, and teacher. He has performed largely within the Jazz, Afro-Caribbean and Brazilian idioms and has recorded extensively with national and international musicians. Pepe has played many festivals in the Caribbean, Spain, France, Greece, Italy and the Soviet Union. He recently recorded his first CD, Looking Back.

        Robert Daly is the Director of the Kissinger Institute on China and the United States at the Woodrow Wilson Center. Mr. Daly began work in U.S.-China relations as a diplomat with the United States Information Agency from 1989 to 1991, after which he taught Chinese at Cornell. From 1992 to 1999 he worked on television projects in China as a host, actor, and writer, and helped to produce Chinese-language versions of Sesame Street and other Children’s Television Workshop programs. During that same period he directed the Syracuse University China seminar and served as a commentator on U.S.-China relations and Chinese affairs for several U.S. and Chinese media outlets. From 2001 to 2007 he was American Director of the Johns Hopkins University-Nanjing University Center for Chinese and American Studies. And later he was director of the Maryland China Initiative at the University of Maryland.

Voice of America Interviews ISH Residents

Voice of America’s report “Number of International Students at US Colleges Rising” addressed the seven percent rise in international students attending U.S. colleges and universities in the 2012-2013 academic year which represents a record high of almost 820,000 students. The feature was filmed in part at International Student House and  included interviews with two ISH residents, Neena Dominic and Zheng Zhu, who discussed their experiences studying in the United States.

ISH 2013 Lifetime Service Award: Dr. Sherry Migdail

 sherrymigdailSherry has served as a member of the Board of Directors of International Student House (ISH) for more than 30 years.  She was asked to join the Board by its then President James Wilson who recognized her deep experience as an educator and who, over her 40 years of teaching, worked with students ranging from the elementary to graduate school levels in the United States, Mexico, Venezuela and Chile.  Sherry received both Master’s and Doctoral degrees from The American University in special education and educational psychology.  As a member of ISH’s Board, she has served as an invaluable resource and has provided generations of our students with personal friendship and guidance as they have begun their professional careers.  Sherry has enriched the lives of thousands of ISH residents, and was oftentimes able to engage them through her flawless command of the Spanish language.  The Board of Directors is especially pleased to present Sherry with our Lifetime Service Award in recognition of her irrepressible enthusiasm for our mission and her tireless advocacy for international dialogue.  She embodies all that makes ISH an extraordinary learning experience for students from every part of the world.

ISH 2013 Global Leadership Award: Ambassador William J. Burns, Deputy Secretary of State

Ambassador William J. Burns was appointed Deputy Secretary of State in July 2011. He is currently the highest ranked US Foreign Service Officer in the United States, and the second career diplomat in history to serve in this capacity.

Ambassador Burns served as Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs from 2008 to 2011. Prior to this role, he was Ambassador of the United States to Russia from 2005 to 2008. Previously, Ambassador Burns also served as Assistant Secretary of State for Near Eastern Affairs from 2001 to 2005 and Ambassador of the United States to Jordan from 1998 to 2001. He has served extensively overseas and held many other positions in Washington. Ambassador Burns earned a Bachelor of Arts in History from LaSalle University and a Master of Philosophy and Doctor of Philosophy degrees in International Relations from Oxford University, where he studied as a Marshall Scholar. He is the recipient of three honorary doctoral degrees and his languages include Russian, Arabic, and French.

Ambassador Burns’ wife, Lisa Carty, is Senior Advisor of the CSIS Global Health Policy Center. She has devoted her career to international health and humanitarian issues. She previously worked for the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and the US Agency for International Development.
